Asian Chicks: One thing I'd rather be doing.

Ah yes Thor, you are correct. The entity known as "The Pulgari Trap" is not yet complete. You can view some of my additions to the project by watching the trailer. Astute viewers may witness an on-screen cameo of yours truly in the trailer (hint: I play a door). As for the other two pieces, maybe they could be shown as pre-game entertainment at the next spoo party. Perhaps we could throw in some "Pulgari" footage and it will be an international trilogy worthy of a gala celebration. So there we go. A post about media that is still related to gaming.

And lo, there we're OpenGL forms. Although they lack a certian elegance I strive for in my code at the moment. They work! I can't put controls on it like buttons and textboxes but I do have labels working. Just gotta make em use the right font. With a little kindness from OpenGL I may be handling mouse and keyboard events by the end of next week. That may be optimistic though.

I tired. I sleep.

Hey, I figured I'd try this thing out. I sent an email out to a few of you involving Asian chicks and editing platforms - perhaps it will spark some interesting discussion. (CrowScape, I'd send it to you but I don't have your email address anymore. Unfortunate, considering your affinity for both media and Asian chicks, if I remember correctly).

I hate to talk about this in the public, Intrigue, but simple additions I requested for the AV8 site were never implemented, making it nonfunctional and unfriendly to first time users. Requests for such changes were made on multiple occasions, and were subsequently not acted upon, therefore no additional content was acquired.

I did however push for a little content once, however, my AV8 e-mail was somehow deleted without my knowledge, and impossible to re-instate. So that killed that dead in it's tracks.

Gosh, I think I should vacate from the digital world. It's far too hot in here for me here lately.

[In other news, I suppose you also don't like the WoW guild tabard as well. Such is the way of things...it seems...for me. ;)]

I have not yet seen ANY of these! When can I come over and view them?

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Thursday January 27 2005 10:33am
Well, March or April is fine by me. What I am concered about is that we do another Memorial Day massive lan/fun bash like last year. That was literaly the highlight of my year. ;) So I would greatly like to see that.

The only problem with April is that there is a good chance I will be in either the Dells (one weekend) or Tulsa (which spelled backwards is 'a slut')

So, let it be written, but also LET IT BE IN MAY! MAY! MAY! also.

(late may)

B_W

P.S. DBBQC, you have 2 Macs?!?! Wow! Any word from Cali?

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 8:31pm
That shit's outta control! Allow me to briefly intervene with an important question...
how many ya'll want to do a LAN event in March? Because I'm thinking April, myself. Should be enough time to get WoW out of my system, and reach a few Pulgari milestones I've set with Schmunk. Also enough advance to reserve the proper gaming room. Thoughts? Hosting volunteers? Cocktail recipies? Spare pants?

Posted by: CJOS Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 8:03pm
Greetings! The Chief Justice of Smack here.  I saw a post that called for my limited wisdom and guidance.

Like others in this forum, I am a Mac user.  Like many others in this forum, I use my computer to create media of many varieties.  You may have seen some of my work in projects like "Lithuanians Gone Wild!", "Lithuanians Gone Wilder!", or my personal favorite, "Rican Rage!".  They might be better known to you folks by their street names of "The Pulgari Trap", "Freedom's Border", or "Beyond Imagination" respectively.  I'm telling you, these projects are HOT!  Go see 'em! Any way, getting back to the point, most of my available time is spent working on these projects.  However, sometimes the need arises (or when Mrs. CJOS is out of town)when The Chief needs to blow off a little steam with some gaming.

As for what I play, I recommend the Classic (because if you're a Mac user, that's what you're going to be running it in) "Civilization II".  Nothing like turn-based strategy from back in the day to make your night go completely bye-bye. Being the "Star Wars" geek I am, I also appreciate a few rounds of "Galactic Battlegrounds" too. Similar to Civ II, but it's a real-time strategy game so I can get in a quicky in between rescuing weiner dogs from laundry shoots and then going to work where I give B_W his daily tidings of comfort, joy, and occasionally servings of Big Whiskey Moonshine Limited Edition. Another great "Oldie but a Goodie" is "Starship Troo ..." oh, I mean "StarCraft". That and just about anything else from Blizzard before 1998 (back when I had yet to discover the ultimate joy of stepping into a big pile of non-linear editing addictions). Finally, for another retro twist, I find myself basking in the warm glow of emulators. The Chief loves re-living the glory years of the NES, Genesis, SNES, Arcade Games and more ruled the earth with a "Nintendo Thumb" fist. I'm currently addicted to the NES version of "Jaws: The Revenge". Most of it has to do with my fascination of Mario Van Peebles. Man, even then he was a BAADAAAAASSSS!

So as you can see, I'm not an authority on Mac gaming. I knows what I likes, and I likes what I knows. However, back in the day, The Chief was a frequent visitor of "Virtual Magic" (now known as "Virtual Magic's BFG Paintball") where he would go over to the PC side to play users in online games of yore such as "Quake" (the original one), "Duke Nukem 3D", and "Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight". I've been hearing a lot about this "WOW" game and would love to do some "WOWing" with all of you friendly spooHeads if I ever get the game (and Internet access for his M4 (Mad Media Making Machine)).

But now, the sweet smell of Kopp's is luring The Chief away from his post at The Cube. Until next time, spoo on to others as you would have spooed to you!

The Chief Justice of Smack.

I bought my G4 back in the day with a chunk of my savings that, thanks to unemployment post graduation, no longer exists. My G3 laptop is still being paid off. I did price out an Athlon 64 recently. Sans monitor I look like I might be able to swing that once I get some of my other bills paid.

I don't game on the Mac or anywhere really. I had fun with San Andreas on the PS2. Think I might pick up the Phantasy Star Collection coming out soon on the chance that one day I may get to enjoy it. Ditto for Gran Turismo 4 (Although I'll likely wait till that comes down in price). Out of the office I'm writing my game, now that Fortune is as far as I want to push it for the moment. Using the compilers from MS to compile the source for Eclipse, and Perl to make a build environment for it. Gimp to make textures. Source Edit to edit all the source. I'm good for now on clock cycles but as I have to start building the networking with graphics things will start to take a while.

Speaking of, I should get some fooda in me and start banging away at code. Outtie.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 6:13pm
>So Crow, you are raising your hand and lamenting to your teacher and class and not just here right?

Well, as I did present my post as a parody of my teacher's response, you tell me. Of course I did! I come prepared to fight the Man... er... Woman. But I don't lament, I leave that to my poor teacher who shall soon see that she has been lobbying on behalf of a lie this whole time.

As for games... I've been playing bejeweled on my cell phone... does that count?

Posted by: HULK Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 4:22pm
HULK agree...Hulk want to talk about games. Hulk prefer Hide and Seek. Duck, Duck, Goose good too!

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 12:36pm
Well, although I would say posts should be about games, Jim's comments do have 'facts' and 'research'. So that is more that than can be said for some posts. I would very much so be up for having different forums for Mac users, and political discussions, etc, perhaps on the defunct (but I believe still operating) AV8 website. If there is interest I will get that ball rolling posthaste

Now on to the games!
First: DBBQC, you can afford a Mac, but not a PC? Whatever. ;)

>But then as this forum does seem to emphasize PC gaming I guess it doesn't matter cause I can't >afford a new machine to run the new stuff.
Please you, or Adam, or Jamie, fill us all in on the wonderful world of Mac gaming! I want to see paragraphs of flowing prose telling me about all the wonderful games on the Mac that you are playing, that I am missing out on. Because since I don't use Macs, I CAN'T TALK ABOUT MAC GAMES. But I would very much like to hear about them. Perhaps even come over and play some.

And don't tell me there isn't any such thing as Mac games, because WoW is available on macs. But I can play that on a PC. Marathon for the Mac was very good. As was a game called 'spaceward ho'. But that was the extent of my Mac gaming 'back in the day'.

>And if I could, I'd be using it [a PC] more for compileing than gaming.
As for myself, I make this little thing called 'Media' with my 'highly affordable overpowered beast machines', which both brings me great satisfaction and a little extra $$$ in the ole 'hip pocket'. So I use my PCs for all sorts of great things, as well as gaming.

But if you're not gaming on a Mac, and you wouldn't game on a PC, do you in fact game? Or is it just console these days?

One more thing DBBQC, what kind of software apps are you working out outside of the office these days? (that you would need help compileing with a PC) If you ever need a little extra horsepower, all you have to do is ask, and the PCs will be at your disposal. ;)

B_W

p.s. pardon my language, but on that 'steve jobs mac intro' video you can see the exact frame where he has the first documented 'mac caused orgasm'. Many have followed since. I think I will have to produce an expose. ;)

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Wednesday January 26 2005 7:51am
So Crow, you are raising your hand and lamenting to your teacher and class and not just here right? Plus, from what I've been reading this forum is supposed to be about GAMES!

GAMES!

GAMES!

So on that subject, gee I wish I had time to play them. I thought that would be a plus of graduating college. But then as this forum does seem to emphasize PC gaming I guess it doesn't matter cause I can't afford a new machine to run the new stuff. And if I could, I'd be using it more for compileing than gaming.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Tuesday January 25 2005 6:20pm
To the games, then! With all this WoW Fever going around, there are those with a growing appetite for something where the payoff is a little faster, and doesn't require quite so much culinary expertise.

Best bet for robot dogs:
2845.mechnex.net/
Mod for Vengeance based in a more traditional Starsiege timeline. For those with a hard-on for mechs, this should wet your appetite (and perhaps your pants).

www.redorchestra.clanservers.com/
Winner of the Make Something Unreal mod contest, this may soon be going retail. It features Communists in prominent roles.

www.pariahgame.com/
You may have heard we probably won't be getting a UT2005 this year. While that saddens me a little, most of the UT2004 content developers have been busy working on something bigger, and perhaps even better.

In other news, Vengeance single-player keeps getting better. As you may have heard, you play through a variety of time periods, as different characters, often on different sides. I've finally reached the segment where I get to play as Jericho, who is essentially Spike Speigel with a spinfusor (including the same voice actor, although Interweb has been unable to confirm this for me). The physics have also been very satisfying. For example, I was recently caged in a Blood Eagle hanger awaiting a security hack. Hostile Tribesmen were pouring in from all directions, but not before I was able to commandeer a dual-chaingun turret. Well the first time I got rocked when fighter craft started flying in through hatches in the floor. The second time, I decided to pile a bunch of crap onto those gates, including corpses, crates, and chairs. Sure enough, when the doors opened, the weight of all the falling doodads (some of which were explosive) slowed the ascending ships enough to create a nice traffic jam, and an easy target for mortar drops. Strategy and jetpacks, in one FPS? Huzzah!

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday January 25 2005 6:05pm
Ah! Liberal teachers! How wonderful! See, the media has fostered these "misperceptions," especially that Fox News channel. Man, that's full of misinformation. For instance, can you believe that 65% of people think that there was a connection between Saddam and al Qeada? The ignorance is truely amazing!

What's that? Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda's second in command, met with Iraqi intelligence in 1992 and 1998, and was paid $300,000 by Iraq for his trouble? Excuse me? There's a training camp called Salman Pak in Iraq that has a Boeing 707 on the ground, and an Iraqi Army officer who defected says al Qaeda trained there? Huh? Hu'sham al Hussein, the second secretary of the Iraqi embassy in Manila, was caught talking to two leaders of Abu Sayyaf, an al Qaeda affiliate, immediately before and after a bombing commited by that group in Zamboanga City? He was declared persona non grata and kicked out of the Philippines?

So, you're saying there was a connection between Iraq and al Qaeda? Well, you just have a different interpretation. You're special, not like those people. Those people though, they're nuts, being mislead by teh 3v!1 F4ux N3\/\/s!!!!!!1!!1!11

Now, who's seen Fahrenheit 9/11? Man, that's some good shit!

I've got a great idea, why don't we talk about GAMES?

Isn't there some Mac blog you Mac people can blog your Mac stuff on called 'The Mac' or something?

You don't see me saying:
Gosh, my PC is SO INEXPENSIVE.
or,
I can run SO MANY GAMES and other software apps ON MY PC.
or,
My PC is so personalized it's like I built it myself...oh wait I did build it myself.
or,
I just built a really small portable PC to my specification with a wireless keyboard and mouse that I carry around and it's super cool and under $500.
or,
I got this video editing board that does real time streams and is hardware scalable with a very robust NLE that is modular and compatible with After Effects for under $1,000 three years ago, and it's just as good today as it was then.
or,
any other of ten thousand things...every...FREAKING...DAY. Do I? No. No, I don't think so. So why do you? Hmmm? Hmmm? HMMM?

Games people. Let's talk about those. Or robot dogs. I miss the robot dogs.

Oh and by the way, what's with that film "Napolean Dynomite" anyway? I haven't seen it, but I urge you not to see it, just to annoy the people that have.

So there.
Go PC's! There really GREAT. Whoo!

cleaning this page, that i can do pretty easily...however, as i dig around, I see javascript has been appended to nearly all the static pages of Pulgari Trap, which means many hundreds of files in html alone. I'll need a more procedural approach to that...i should be able to write a perl script that pattern-matches the offending code and eliminates it. But as you noted Peter, if HostSave still has worms crawling around their servers, it all might come back. But once i have the script i should be able to just run it again if that happens. See, this is why I like having Javascript disabled. 9 times out of 10 it's used for t3h 3v1l.

Here's to drinking at work!

Not that there is necessarialy anything wrong with a sex-bar. I mean, perhaps that's a service that you are offering to your audience. You know. It's not a problem till you say it's a problem. ;) Then it's just an 'undocumented feature' of your site. ;)

It's all in how you look at it.

B_W, I don't think the popups are our issue anymore. After I alerted HostSave about the problem a week ago, they called me back and said they caught the malignant file and eliminated it. I haven't had a problem with pop-ups since. I'd suggest running Ad-Aware SE and Spybot just to make sure.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Friday January 21 2005 11:27am
Awww. I wish I would have known yesterday was 'whatever' day. Oh well. I would have kicked it up a notch. If they are trying to play a cash game, I hate to break it to them, but a bunch of bohemians on the east side (or, Bay View) aren't gonna be shelling out the $$$ anyway. ;) You know I learned yesterday that one of the greatest 'landslide' elections of all time is supposedly FDR in his second term, with 61% of the popular vote. Mind you, that's significant, but it is only ten points higher than this past election. If ten percet of voters represents some outragous landslide majority, well, this is a closer game than I was led to believe.

LJ, sorry to hear you won't be making it. I weaved a basket of good times for you and everything. It's alright though, I wouldn't drive in this weather myself. ;)

These 'sex toolbar' popups here are pretty annoying. Can we get the IT department on this? ;)

Well, today was "Not One Red Dime" Day, where people aren't supposed to buy anything in order to protest President Bush's inauguration. I honestly don't know what Hassim at the local Quick-Stop has to do with Bush's inauguration, but apparently he deserves to be fired for it. So, in honor of today, I spent $120 that I didn't have to, and probably shouldn't have. So, I am now the proud owner of the complete Last Exile boxed set... although my copy is still at the warehouse.

Oh, and I'm sorry, but the weather report tells me the shit, she's a commin. So it looks like I will not be attending. I will have to drink alone.

Yes, I am getting pop-ups here. That's kinda wierd.

Don't blame IE for my not receiving event updates, I was just looking at the 'news' section. I guess there just isn't any news.

Ok, now I have heard some very juicy WoW simultainious login numbers being thrown around. Well, they were a little juicyer than in reality. Here are the real usage numbers:

"World of Warcraft smashed records in North America when it was launched before Christmas, selling through over 600,000 units by the end of the year and seeing 200,000 players logged in simultaneously - the largest number of concurrent players ever see in an MMORPG."

Damn it and I'm all out of matches!

I hope I can attend the gathering... I'm gonna need booze. I had my first classes today. Drama it seems is angry about me calling him a "fag" in high school and he seems intent on anally... well... I'll just leave it there. Meanwhile, I have picked up another course that I'm sure you folks here will appreciate: Mass Media and Popular Culture. Four books are required for this course. One of them is written by a liberal, another by a liberal who has apparently suffered more brain damage than usual, one by a communist, and I'm not sure who wrote the other. Fox News seems to be the example of what is wrong with the media in this class (Oh! She wants to show us "Outfoxed!" Can we work "Farenheit 9/11" in there too?!), even though Fox News hasn't been caught completely fabricating stories or pulling fake documents out of its ass ::cough::CBS::cough::NYT::cough::BBC::cough:: She's gonna show us how there really isn't a liberal media. I'm guessing Dan Rather and Mary Mapes will be guest speakers on that topic.

So, I'm going to have a lot of work to do in that course. So many misguided ideas, so little time.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Tuesday January 18 2005 7:30pm
B_W, the new event has been posted for a while, but if you're using an IE cache you'll probably have to hit refresh on the page to see it. Also, the new game quote is a send out to my pal CrowScape, keeping it real down in the Dark State. Indeed, all are welcome to game at my place on saturday and sunday. However, I don't want to commit to anything friday because i may be working late, and when i get out I'll probably be accepting Mario's invitation for a flagon of mead, and i'm also toying with the idea of taking in some fine rock at the Rave, perhaps Something Corporate. But Saturday at noon, the LAN is on.

Also, please let me know if you get strange pop-ups on this page...

Regarding Mac, despite my previous links, rest assured DBBQC that I have priced out a Mac Mini several times online, and tried (unsuccessfully) to grope one at Mayfair before Elektra, before Remembering The Cube and putting away my credit card. Backlot Imaging now operates DVD Studio Pro 3, which is the most solid and intuitive piece of advanced software I have ever used - and it's cheap, too. Knowing almost nothing about DVDs, I was up and running in 90 minutes flat. And not just drag-and-drop shit, I was remapping overlay pallettes and scripting non-linear title access, while background rendering at a variable bit rate. I produced a shipping product the first day. Smoother than the fine silk bandages i made last night in WoW. They even included a real, printed manual *and* tutorials book, on actual paper! Try and get that service out of Adobe or Microsoft. Lucky if you get a fucking jewel case.

But as Peter noted, it's largely an issue of "to each his own". There are a few truths that B_W has observed. First, despite the exceptions noted here, the elitist Mac attitude is as real as their elitist prices, and very much the norm. Oh, sure, there are folks beating off to AMD, Intel, and Microsoft logos at the same time, but the majority of PC users lack the defensiveness of the Mac-Zealot crowd. It is, as the wise man said, just a tool. But you walk into an Apple store, and suddenly tools are worshipped as "art", which leads to a religion - the pinnacle of ignorance. Steve Jobs does a good job of fueling the faith, and ultimately Apple stays in business and crafts fine-tuned software such as DVDSP3 which I use to get paid. So, it's not really a problem. Let them have their religion.

Yet, at the end of the day, I question anyone who uses computers heavily, and thinks they can abandon PCs. By "using heavily", I don't mean E-mail, Word, and iTunes. I use myself as an example. Computers are inextricably tied to both facets of my daily life, the work and the play. I demand high performance from a wide variety of applications. I also like to play games. I even like fiddling with my hardware as a hobby, despite my low income. With these three realities, PCs are a far better world for me to be in. I can't say with a straight face that Macs offer anywhere near the utility, recreation, or economics of a common WinDell. And neither can 95% of humans, so maybe there's something more than opinion there?

But that doesn't mean all Macs and Mac Users should should be eradicated. Just the annoying ones. ;)

My apologies B_W if I was going to far. I never meant to get all up in your face or anything. I was/am just really pleased with my Fortune program and I didn't think it was quite worthy of a gathering to show it off (One of those rare times when I had an idea in my head and it came out just as well in reality). So I aspoused here. And I just wanted to have some fun with combinitorics with the 240 song thing. Wasn't tring to say "Mac hardware n' software rulez!" As for the other stuff, excitement just got the better of me. I wasn't tring to convert you or nothing. The person I thought might like to know about the MAC mini (although it was proably nieve of me to think that maybe he didn't) was Nearscape cause he was eyeing an eMac for a while there.

No offence ment. May I please be removed from your A$$hole's list? I mean, I don't drive really slow in the ultra fast lane while people behind me are going insane. Nor do I eat McDonald's from the old fashioned styrafoam containers and throw them right out the side of the car. Shoot, I don't eat at McDonalds nor do I own a car! Come on guy! Don't be a hatea.

Outtie!

Good points, B_W. Though not all Mac users are such. I wish to present one Jamie Fetherston who is a Mac user but does not act as typical Mac users who feel the need to push Mac products and berate those who choose to use PCs.

I myself use both PCs and Macs on a daily basis. I will be quick to point out that I do not feel strongly for or against one or the other. My PC can run some amazing Data Collection software that causes the Mac to crash incessantly. The Mac can run some amazing Data Analysis software in minutes where the PC takes days. Neither one is perfect, but both are TOOLS that help me work efficiently. There are those who prefer one tool to another. That does not necessarily mean that one is better than the other. We can go back and forth between pros and cons of Macs and PCs, most of which seem more opinion-based than factual. When you come down to it they are both just tools that the user uses to got the job done.

There....B_W does that help?

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Tuesday January 18 2005 1:13pm
Adam, I won't ever trust a mac farther I have a clean shot at it, first because of my past experience using them, and second because of the attitudes of those that swear by them.

I use PCs. You don't see me shoving it in everyone's face, or screaming as soon as every new product or technology comes out. I am very excited about being a PC user, but I keep it to myself. At an event called 'filmcon' last year we set up some PCs, and these macheads walked into the room and called our computers "garage pieces of trash", completly unprovoked. (I don't even think they said 'hi'.) Then I said, 'well that's nice but I like PCs' and they proceeded to berate us some more. I don't know if a$$holes use macs, or if macs make you an a$$hole, but so far it's been far afield to meet a mac user that doesn't try and shove their computer selection up my a$$ every morning, noon, and night.

Brutal Honesty in the 2k5. Catch the fever.

Also, I thought this spoolan business was going to be about the 'LAN'. Is there an event this saturday? Because the last event post was in August. ;) JustinB, the last time we spoke there was talk of not having the event on friday, is this still true? What's the 'score'?

Yay! I'm so happy my buddy won a Golden Globe!!!

-A

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Monday January 17 2005 12:49pm
Star Wars and Star Trek fans rejoice, for last night was certainly a sign of the apocalypse! For the first time in history actors from both series received awards on the same night! Amazingly enough, William Shatner, renowned worldwide as Captain James T Kirk or TJ Hooker, received his first Golden Globe win (this was also his first nomination) last night for Boston Legal where he plays a lawyer....Now THAT's not logical. Who would have ever thought that anyone would award William Shatner for his abilities as an actor. To top things off, Natalie Portman won her first Golden Globe (her first nomination as well) for playing a prostitute in Closer. Thus I have finally calculated a way for Sci-Fi actors that we know and love to get the awards they deserve - They must play a role that is completely ill-suited for their general personality. For example, Leonard Nemoy needs to play a psychotic mental patient whose nonsensical rantings help him find true love. Milla Jovovich (Fifth Element, Resident Evil, The Messenger) needs to play a darling damsel in distress who must be rescued at the first sight of evil. Finally, Bruce Boxleitner (Captain Sherridan) needs to play a computer programmer who gets stuck in a video game world....wait nope...he's tried that one....um...a horse rancher who tries to teach inner-city children the value of moral simple living...no, that one didn't work...um...a stark raving mad abusive alcoholic who gets convicted for pushing his wife out of a window..no, he's done that too......how about a spy who falls in love with the daughter of his boss....wait no..he's tried that.......hmm....okay...let's face it, there's no hope for Captain Johnny. But maybe some of the others mentioned will win. Hey, if Shatner could do it....

No matter what, at least stuff from Apple is becoming affordable. That, is a good thing. :) It also gave me an excuse to play with combinitorics again. That, is a great thing!

I don't think the shuffle is bad at all. It's got the ability to go back and forth on the playlist which is all it really needs. Yeah choosing an exact song is a nice feature, but as an avid user of iTunes, I can say that being able to bounce back and forth on a playist of songs that you like works just fine.

Posted by: Big_Whiksy Posted on: Sunday January 16 2005 11:44pm
Brutal honesty in the 2k5. Embrace it.

Now then back to the GAMES! (because you know for me, the action, is the juice)

Res Evil 4 is way hot. Red hot even. They've integrated 3d into their world quite seamlessly, and kept the same uneasy feel, without the awkward camera transitions. (anyone remember the first person ResEvil game for Playstation? I played it, and it was kind of the first step down this road) They have also given you the blessing of many bullets, so you don't have to name them and love them like your children like you used to.
It's a barrel of fun. I highly suggest it for any survival horror fans, or anyone who wants to shoot countless european farmers repeadedly in the knees and watch them drop. ;) That's always fun too!

Now, back to the WoW.

Later Gents,

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Sunday January 16 2005 8:41pm
Well, it could be an infinite number of times. Tell me, does the shuffle allow repeats?

That said, I did get a huge guffah out of their advertising: "Embrace Uncertainty." See! Our lack of any way to control the order of your playlist is a feature! Honestly! Embrace Marketing!

Posted by: Dream BBQ Child Posted on: Sunday January 16 2005 8:16pm
This has been bugging me about Apple since MacWorld. They say that the iPod Shuffle can take 240 songs and play them a million different ways. That is WAY in accurate. It would be FAR more accurate to say...

240! = 4067885363647058120493575921486885310172051259182827146069755969081486918925585104009100729728348522923820890245870098659147156051905732563147381599098459244752463027688115705371704628286326621238456543307267608612545168337779669138759451760395968217423617954330737034164596496963986817722252221059768080852489940995605579171999666916004042965293896799800598079985264195119506681577622056215044851618236292136960000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 ways with the same playlist.

As you can see, the number of possible random playlists on the shuffle is far, far greater than a millon.

Oh well, at least they're being conservative in their claims now. :) And I suppose it would be inconvienant if 4067885363647058120493575921486885310172051259182827146069755969081486918925585104009100729728348522923820890245870098659147156051905732563147381599098459244752463027688115705371704628286326621238456543307267608612545168337779669138759451760395968217423617954330737034164596496963986817722252221059768080852489940995605579171999666916004042965293896799800598079985264195119506681577622056215044851618236292136960000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 a was declared legally to be infinity or something.

Crow,
Well, first off I thought you weren't coming? (I wish you would, it would give me hope; but I thought you told us in your last post you weren't...or you were just being cryptic for being cryptic's sake?)

Second, the answer is simple. Get some crack. You would also be welcome to try my copy of Bloodlines, or play a little HL2. (or a little XMP with Justin so he isn't lon-ley) As for me and my box, it will be WoW, HL2, a little Tribes, and alot of whisky! ;) (possibly a little black hawk down, or something to loosen the mood. gotta get loose.)

GET THE CRACK LJ. NEVERMIND WHAT I TOLD YOU IN PERSON! BWWWAHAHAHA!

B_W

why do we have to provide your fun anyway? ;) isn't my glowing personality enough? perhaps we could play endless tankwars! or perhaps you could produce the intellistation? Would that be enough? what would you like to do, Jim? what would you like to do?

I just did a review for some Goth friendly video games, and since that is what THIS SITE IS ALL ABOUT, and not many of you are members of the MGC, I will post it here as well. Enjoy!!!

++++
Greetings All,
Well, I don't know how many of you play 'the games', but since some have recently come out that might just interest the Goth community, I thought it my duty to publicly review them.

The first is a new game put out by white wolf studios and activision called 'Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines'. This is a combo RPG/FPS set in modern times, in which you as a vampire must make your way up the ranks. What sets this game apart is it's robustness in the RPG elements, as most of the 'action' occurs through text screens where you try and gain influence over people and other vampires. You have seven different 'houses' of vampires to choose from, each sports their own specialty of vamprism. The Nosferatu for example, are hideous and must remain in the shadows, while other houses use their good looks and charm to get what they desire. (my favorite part being one of the prissiest of the houses, in which the instructions describe that "if you try feeding of prostitutes or the homeless, there is a %50 chance of inducing vomiting". Great stuff. ;) Not only the house you select, but other things like your character's gender, and how you act in public greatly affects how your character is treated.
For those who are a little more into games, this title used the new 'Half Life Source' engine, which is very fresh. Physics are handled very well, but this is an RPG after all, so that isn't necessarily necessary. The modeling is OK, not quite as polished as the mainstream games of 2k4. So if that's important to you, you might be a little disappointed with Bloodlines. The 'action' elements of the game (gun shooting, melee fighting, etc) are a little stiff, so be prepared for that also. However, if you're looking for a very robust vampire RPG, give Bloodlines a look.

OK. Now for the real action. If you don't have the greatest computer (you can have a great computer don't get me wrong) but you have a broadband internet connection, and the idea of mixing it up with thousands and thousands of people sounds interesting to you, give 'World of Warcraft' a serious look. I am not an RPG gamer, haven't been for many years, (until I gave Bloodlines a look) but this game caught me off guard and won my heart (and my free time) almost instantly.
For those who aren't familiar with the Warcraft universe, it's a realm loosely based on the 'Lord of the Rings'. The races are (alliance) Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, and Gnome VS. (horde) Orc, Undead, Tauren (minotaur like bulls), and Troll. In the original three games, it was an RTS, or real time strategy game, where you fight with two armies.
Well this is completely different. It is a Massively Multi-player Online Game, or MMOG for short. Very similar in style to a previous game called 'Everquest'. Now, those that know Everquest, please hold your groaning for later, because this game so far exceeds it it's not funny. In an MMOG, you pick a character, and live through that character. There are a number of classes you can choose (Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Warlock, Paladin, Priest, Shaman - not all Races can be all classes) and each class has their own 'fun'.
Now I am no MMOG guy, I didn't get into Everquest, Matrix Online, Star Wars Galaxy, Planetside, or any of the others. Mainly because they sucked. ;) However, this game puts you in such a robust, fun, and easy to get around world it's very hard not to be immediately hooked. The parse everything out so nicely, it's hard not to stop, once you start completing quests, making friends, obtaining really unique character items, and leveling up your character.
The areas and cities in this game are also very unique and filled with fun and different things to do. There are full e-bay style auction houses in the game so you can auction off that great ax in game, along with other fun and interesting ways to interact with your fellow players. You don't just slaughter beasts and your fellow adversaries in the game either, you can have up to 2 professions that have you leather working, enchanting, even mining or making potions with all the loot you get from your adventures.
I could go on and on, but the real question is HOW IS THIS GOTH? Well, each side has a 'Goth' friendly race, believe it or not. The Alliance has the 'Night Elves' which are very tall blue skinned, glowing eyed, elves which favor nature loving magic and communing with nature in general. The Horde has the 'Undead', which is about as Goth as you can get. Men and women wear clothing you would find right off the shelves at the former 'Wailing Banshee' (RIP), and most of the time, as an undead you spend your time either 1. hanging out in a graveyard, 2. hanging out in a tomb, 3. hanging out in an abandoned church, or 4. (my favorite) harassing the living.
This game is really outrageous, because it really is frightening when a mob of undead players come coursing into a city, or when you are in combat with other people. An absolutely fantastic title, I highly recommend it, both as a Goth game and as a game in general.

OK, I hope you found this piece somewhat interesting. If you have any questions about this, or anything else for that matter, do not hesitate to ask.
+++++

Hello my peeps! I have returned from the Land of Eternal Spring and Insects and Plants that Poke You in Uncomfortable Places. It was nice to bask in seventy-degree weather for a while, only to be whisked cruelly into the formaldehyde scented arms of Old Man Winter. But all was not milk and whisky, for I had to save my mother from the tyranny of nature! With blade and spike and a wheelbarrow full of justice I battled the deciduous demons and hew a righteous path of freedom through the backyard. When all was over I was covered in the sap of my enemies and the scent of burnt xylem drifted through the air. It was glorious, if a bit icky.

In other news, I have successfully registered for classes at Loyola, where academic festivities commence on the 18th. I shall partake in the learning of both American and international politics. I am, apparently, to be introduced to Drama, specifically the literature thereof, despite the fact that I went to high school with Drama, where I routinely mugged him for his lunch money and questioned his sexual orientation. Finally, I shall get jiggy with deviance, and the associated imposition of social controls to restrain it.

Thus, as I will have gone through the first week of learning, I am unsure as to whether my propensity to attend gatherings will be able to overcome the practicality of getting pissed at home.

To be continued?

Also whenever I send people here, they can never find the forum, even though I tell them to come to 'query', (probabily becuase they don't understand what they are getting into, or just because they are dull) either way that might help the masses, and that's what I am all about. ;)

Lately my gaming minutes are taken up by HL2, CS, HLMP, and the ever present WoW.

Wow. That was great Peter. It near brought a tear to my eye. (and also near into my beer, but, it's noon somewhere)

I never played rebellion. I had friends that would play it turn based. That was pretty dull they said, which I could see. I hear it was a good game though. Just not turn based.
I will say that the pinnacle of star wars gaming in my universe came with the consummate classic 'Tie-Fighter' in which you swing entire imperial campaigns from the cockpit of the most frail starfighter in the galaxy.
There were two moments in that game that really touched my soul. First was when the emperor said, 'The Empire is on the Verge of Suc-cess', the other was when Grand Admiral Thrawn did some SERIOUS POINTING. That is a game that could never be re-created, and that was proven in the well meaning, put poorly executed 'X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter' of 1996. Nice engine, poor just about everything else. Ah, to be a teenager again...no wait, those years sucked.

Something tells me a very protein deprived, thin to the point of frail, perhaps even child like Thrawn would be the best way to execute his character in the "Pulgari Trap". I mean, we wouldn't want someone imposing, stoic, authoritarian or over the age of 21. Make that happen will you Pete? For me???

3. Microsoft's Longhorn

Microsoft's successor to Windows XP was originally promised to ship in 2004, though the company subsequently pushed the launch date to 3015 or something. Obviously, Microsoft won't be able to finish the code until it's had a peek at Apple's forthcoming Tiger.

Bill Restemeyer suggested it be renamed "Longwait."

The company also cut a core feature, a new "revolutionary" file system called WinFS.

Steve Story said, "WinFS has been vaporware for over a decade, and recently a delay of many more years was announced. (2008 has been bandied about.) Somewhere, Microsoft programmers are spending their entire careers on a single piece of vaporware."

Steven "Harley" Davidson said, "If Microsoft keeps on pushing back the dates for Longhorn and removing features from it, they might as well just promise to bundle Duke Nukem Forever with the OS."

Very well, Big Whisky.
You have coaxed it out of me. You want to talk about games? Lets talk about games. I am sad to inform you that PC gaming reached its pinacle in 1997 with the release of Star Wars: Rebellion. Now while I do not deny that the game is based off of earlier strategy games like Master of Orion, it does kick things up to the next level by setting the game in the Star Wars universe, a universe that already has some great emotional attachment for some people. By having the opportunity to play characters from the Star Wars universe, it makes this game better than the foundation upon which it was build. Besides, who here hasn't wanted to take Darth Vader and systematically assasinate Admiral Ackbar and his command staff?("It's a trap" - one of the great movie lines from a character who's head is shaped like Wisconsin). Games are never the same, and strategies do not always work similarly from game to game. Repeat playability: Innumerable. Its hours of fun for the whole family....actually...just for the person actually playing the game....but it is fun!

DBBQC,
It looks more like you were patting yourself on your a$$ instead. ;) I think since no-one is talking about the sweet games on here anymore, we should just soley devote this site to self a$$ patting. So, anyone else? Come on I know you know you want to. Nearscape?

;)

Pat away patties!

It lives! Fortune lives in Version 1.6 and in l33t ness. I even got to get pretty low in OS X to make the window work. I had to impliment my own code so you could drag it around the screen cause the default OS X one didn't like to respond to dragging after the first fortune changed. But then I'm using a window style that is only supposed to be used for background rendering.

Okay, I've patted myself on the back enough here. Time for dinner, yes dinner, and bed.

Such language Nearscape! After all, this is a family forum. Family...only because I consider you all my family! *sob* *sob* *SOB*

Anyway, the 22nd sounds great. However, I think we should also have a WOW event, where we all WOW it up at the same location, and for 48 straight hours. (at least I will do it straight, like I do my whiksy) Speaking of which, anyone try and drink while playing WOW? It's actually not that bad. Well, at least that's how I remember it...

Later,
B_W

p.s. *SOB*!

Yes, Big Whisky...I am alive...barely.

Sorry about the communication crisis. In a series of coincidences that seemed like they could have been spawned from the mind of some hack writing a sitcom, my cell phone was rendered useless. I did however receive your multimedia message attempts (in this case multimedia referring to the fact that you used more than just one medium to track me down). Sorry to keep you guessing as to my whereabouts and worse yet that I was unable to attend your gathering/dinner. Anyway...I am not dead...at least not yet.
Meanwhile as for your subsequent posts, all I can say is "Aciu!". Now...I'm not sure how you learned to wish me a happy birthday in Lithuanian. Nevertheless, I appreciate it. Thanks! ("Aciu" in Lithuanian - FYI).

News flash: PETER IS ALIVE!!!

Unless, this previous post was some kind of 'mystical time echo' or perhaps a 'spacial anomole caused by irratic warp signatures'. No, I think it was Peter.

YOU'RE ALIVE!!! and you missed an entire week+ of Matt & Melissa, parties, gatherings, I didn't even get to sing you you're birthday song and give you a present. This was most disheartening. When no one was looking, I even cried...

But not to worry! I am sure there is plenty of progress on the Pulgari Trap that you are ready to send out to us all post-haste! And that was the cause of your dissapearance: Such powerful Pulgari progress that you possibly could not be disturbed for anything.

Welcome back Peter, and I hope to hear from you soon! (did you get my Christmas card, phone call, e-mail, etc?)

I realize this isn't the most EFFICENT way to do this. Getting a website would be better. I'll get there. Anyway, ATTN MAC USERS! OS X has a serious flaw! That being it does not come with the Unix Fortune program. This is a terriable travasty cause Unix is not Unix without Fortune. Fortunately for you though, I have just finished a maybe 1.0 (A maybe 1.0 = solid beta) of Fortune for OS X that will display random fortunes in a floating, translucent window. If you would like a copy e-mail me at my uwgb.edu address and I'll send you a disk image.

Greetings,
Adam, I liked that list, but why did they have to berate Halo 2 so harshly right off? I mean, sure the single player might be more of the same, but the execution is better. Also the real meat of the matter for H2 is the XBOX live component, which is completly different. (and great, I might add, really fun)

So when guys like this, berate something so harshly, that 1. does not deserve such harsh treatment, and 2. people actually like, it makes me wonder whether or not these guys are on the level, or just a bunch of two-bit-hack-idiots. I tend to go with the latter.

You don't have to like something, but when it is good, or at least OK, don't make me out to be a fool. Because I am not. (despite popular opinion)
