DBBQC, We were all wiped. And very surprized to see you again this weekend! (in a very good way) We had 'lit it up' fully till 4 every night, and it had taken it's tole on mind, body, and spirit. In the best possible way of course. Congradulations to Joci for getting to live out her dream. I guess the only question left will be whether or not you tag along. ;) B_W |

Whoo. Jobs it getting a little 'hot under the collar'. ;) He should take a nice 'Randy-O' and chill for a minute. Perhaps it's to the point that I need to send him a "Big_Whisky whisky station," where six people can enjoy Big_Whisky without waiting, or one person can enjoy six shots of Big_Whisky at once...on second thought, perhaps I should send him two, they are 'chainable'. www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050525_112435.html B_W |

"Good, BigWhisky...Good. You have taken your first step toward the dark side of the Lithuanian language. Release your English, only Russian can destroy me...". I believe the preceeding quote is actually going to be part of the Super Happy Funtime Special Edition of Return of the Jedi where Luke and the Emperor decide that their contest can not be won by their knowledge of the force, but by their ability to speak Lithuanian... MWAHAAHAAHAAHAAAAAAAAA. (George? Just a hint...)) B_W, I'm sending you an email with my response (since spoilers are abound). |

Did that get cut? -A |

Yo, Your grasp of the German language is impressive. ;) Did you know that some original name choices for Padme were 'Rupus Miltai', or 'Shunadvokatis'. You don't want to know the original names for Anakin. ;) [Atlapashiknis was a top choice...it sounds pretty close.] Anyway... STAR WARS SPOILERS TO FOLLOW!!! BWWWAHAHAH! (Borsk get away from my keyboard...) "First off, believe it or not George DOES explain Anakin's immaculate birth in this film" --Well in classic George, he does but he doesn't. Palpatine sets up a scenario where that might be the case, but then says that he 'don't got the chops'. "That one guy could do stuff, and he taught everything to the other guy...but I don't know $hit." The way I interpreted that whole thing was that Palpatine was lying to Anakin to try and get Anakin to the dark side, not 'give up all his $hit'. (as gary oldman would say) If I am way off here, and there is another explanation please break it down, because I am lacking and am replete for knowledge. "Second, It's not that they don't believe the Jedi don't exist or died off hundreds of years ago" --But that doesn't explain why Han doesn't give two rips about the fact that the most badass light side Jedi sans Yoda is sitting in front of him. It also doesn't explain why Chewbacca doesn't give Obi-Wan a hug, considering his past with other little green Jedi. Also most of the imperial officers keep cocking off to Vader, even in Empire, which doesn't make sense at all. You would think these imperial schools would have a 'No Officer Left Behind' policy, where they teach the fall of the republic, and propagandize the emperor and vader's exploits, how the Jedi were evil, etc. These guys just seem ignorant. Once again if there is something I am missing, I would really like to get the 'info'. Oh, and I forgot one before. In IV, (that's 4 not I V [media]) Grand Moff has 1 QUICK line which goes something like this: "Oh and the emperor dissolved the Senate...now on to more important matters..." So what Lucas is saying, is that Palpatine jumps through about a zillion hoops to take over the Republic through politics (getting two armies, and starting a war between them, being voted the power in the senate, etc) only to THROW it all away and use FORCE (not the force...) to retain control? Why didn't he just do it that way the first time? Episodes I, II, and the first part of III should probably be called "Space Politics Wars", and then to have the Senate, the most important piece of the puzzle, go 'bye bye' without a whimper, is kind of silly. (now they might have added something in the special, special, special edition covering this, I haven't seen that) Riddle me that batman. ;) I did enjoy watching the film though. Both times. I will see it again. CROW, Just a thought. If you want to go 'all out' this weekend, would you like to try a new game, say, GUILD WARS. It's getting good reviews...and supposedly not as addictive as WoW. It's just a thought. Laterz, B_W |

| Good point, Crow. I forgot which language "Darth" came from, but the German word for Father, Vater is used for Vader. | |
| Posted by: CrowScape | Posted on: Tuesday May 24 2005 2:57pm |
| Actually, "Darth Vader" is not German, that would be "Dunkel Vater." | |

Whisky...interesting points. I do have a rebuttal to some of them (spoilers witheld). First off, believe it or not George DOES explain Anakin's immaculate birth in this film (however, for spoiler concerns I will not elaborate). Second, It's not that they don't believe the Jedi don't exist or died off hundreds of years ago(which is what everyone originally thought after hearing Admiral Motti in Episode IV say, "you're sad devotion that ancient religion..."). It's not that they believe the Jedi never existed or that it was far too long ago for memory, it is a point that Palpatine mentions in the movie (Once again, spoilers withheld). As for your revelation about the term "Anakin" derived from "Anaki" you are correct, also note that Darth Vader is German for "Dark Father" (also a clever name choice given what we know about the original trilogy). If nothing else, when George names a character, he has a neat reason for it.... One notable exception to the rule is the name "JarJar" which comes from Lucas' son, Jett, who used the praddle to describe a fast vehicle when he was about a year and a half old. For those of you who have not yet seen episode 3 (and for those who have but didn't pay close attention), here are some fun things to look for in Episode 3. See if you can spot them: 1) George Lucas talking to his daughter Katie 2) The Millenium Falcon 3) George Lucas' son Jett as a skillful padawan 4) Imperial rank plates (I'm not talking about Imperial officers with this one). 5) Bruce Spence's cameo (the actor who played Mr. Wall in Dark City) (This one's easy) 6) Wayne Pygram's cameo (the actor who played Scorpius on Farscape) (This one's easy too) 7) "Foamy-Wan Kenobi" (a foam version of everyone's favorite Jedi Master). 8) Artistic rendering of the slaughtering of Sith by Jedi in the background of a particular scene. 9) Mon Mothma, leader and founder of the Rebellion. Now for the hard ones: 10) John Knoll's cameo (co-inventor of Photoshop with his brother Thomas Knoll, prequel VFX supervisor) 11) Ben Burtt's cameo (sound designer for all 6 Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies) 12) Dennis Muren's cameo (VFX supervisor for Episodes 1,4,5, and 6, as well as JP, Abyss, Terminator 2 and Indy). 13) An exploding potato ( a tribute to the use of a potato in Empire Strikes Back's asteroid chase). I'm still looking for #13, but Pablo Hidalgo swears it is in there somewhere. |

Yo, As far as Star Wars goes, I thought Palpatine's 'acting' was equally good in 'a lost hope'. (in seeing it, I thought I was watching the primary text...I mean his "RISE!!!" was spot on) Anakin isn't as whiny in this film as he was in II, but at the same time he isn't much smarter. It seems the Jedi public schools need a 'no youngling left behind' policy...or something. I don't buy Anakin's conversion one bit. If anyone reading hasn't seen it, I won't be the spoiler, but let's just say 'short sighted' isn't even close to the logic they had him spew forth. They never explained Anakin's 'immaculate conception'. That's kind of an important plot point. The Anakin "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" scene is outright laughable. And finally...the rest of the films now not only don't fit, they don't make sense. Just watch episode IV and see: 1. no one beleives the Jedi existed...even though they ran things only 18 years before 2. Chewbacca doesn't tell anyone anything. 3. Grand Mof Tarkin bitch slaps Vader all night long. 4. Why would Uncle Owen re-buy droids he in fact met and owned before? (he owned C3PO and met R2D2 in ep II) You would think he would have remembered that...or someone would have remembered something... I could go on but it would be too depressing. They need to remake IV, V, and VI now. Just for things to match up. Other than that, the film was shiny, distracting, and pretty fun to watch. And having typed 'Anakin' for the first time, I realize that it is one letter off from 'Anaki' the Japanese word for brother. George you sly old devil! Laterz, B_W |

Heh, i figured that would come up sooner or later. Short short version: Episode III is measurably better than I and II. If the original trilogy is fair game, I would also venture that it is better than Return of the Jedi, if only on the basis that Wookies are so much cooler than Ewoks. The caveats/elaborations: It is still a George Lucas film, so there are still some wince/MST3k worthy materials scattered throughout. I enjoyed this snippet from MSN.com: Christensen glowers a lot, just as he did in the previous installment, "Attack of the Clones," and his love scenes with Portman are even more embarrassingly banal than they were last time around. Lucas' dialogue is more to blame than the actors, who are repeatedly sabotaged by unspeakable lines. Accurate. Obviously, there is still zero chemistry or believability in this "romance", but thankfully it gets far less screen time in this Episode. Groan and move on... The other problem central to the Prequels also lingers, though it didn't annoy me this time because I expected it. Namely, the Jedi are irrelevant, and probably always were. The reviewer at boxofficemojo sums it up: The Force, literally, is not with any of them; they do not even sense a disturbance, let alone see it coming. No longer able to evade the drag effects of the Force's irrationality, Revenge of the Sith reveals the orthodox Jedi as a band of powerless proselytizers. While the Sith lords are equally vague, at least they act as if they stand for something. It falls to Obi-Wan Kenobi, the story's godfather, to fully enunciate the Star Wars philosophy, hissing that "only a Sith would speak in absolutes," a statement which asserts an absolute. Also accurate. But I don't think you ever believed Star Wars had any valid philosophy (I sure didn't), so such contradictions are to be expected. Of course, this means that when the Jedi are finally put out of their misery, no amount of dreary John Williams scoring can make it tragic. Fortunately, it is highly satisfying instead. That's the brunt of the uglies. The movie excels on nearly all other fronts though. Tragic elements do survive despite George's mangling of the script, mostly through Ewan McGregor's acting, which is shockingly good this time around (after 5 hours of screen time he's finally figured out how to make the dialogue not sound as stupid as it really is). And the brilliant Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) finally gets the screen time he deserves. The effects are improved, especially digital Yoda. He's far more emotive this time around I thought. Still no Gollum, but getting there. The new 4:4:4 digital cameras he used (same as Sin City) make it pretty much impossible to tell where real and virtual sets meet. There's finally a space battle, though the editing was faster than I would have liked, making it hard to enjoy the scenery. And Lucas deals with the ending better than I thought he would, even having a few scenes on the infamous "Tantive IV" at the end (and dealing with a few of the memory issues, albeit bluntly). ... So yeah, Palpatine rocks. Obi-Wan rocks (finally). Lots of shit blows up. It's a good time. Serenity will probably be better...but as the saying goes, if you see *two* movies this year, see Episode III. Just sit as far away from the screen as you can. |

| i thought the movie was much better than the first two. I & II feel flat and aukward, but episode III can stand on its own, there are still little problems here and there, but they are not on the level of making it a bad movie, every movie has its flaws, but episode III was a true treat. | |
| Posted by: Peter | Posted on: Monday May 23 2005 5:06pm |

I also forgot to mention something: One of the tne choices for nicknames is Golden Knights....Is it just me or is this not the best of possibilities given that the Marquette administration has used the excuse that "warriors and anything have to do with war and battle is not in line with Jesuit ideals". Exactly what kind of knights are we talking about? As I understand it the knights were a chivalrous type of WARRIORS who held an idealic code and fought for honor. I want to see what excuse the administration uses to explain their way out of this one... |

Well...Marquette has done it again. By now, most of you have seen the new list of nickname possibilities. Pulling a fast one, Marquette has eliminated the "Jumping Jesuits" as a nickname possibility AND forbids its use as a WRITE-IN vote. I can understand (though I don't fully agree) with the Administration's arguements against using the nickname Warriors (or any manipulation/instance/mention of 'war') and forbids its use, but is Jumping Jesuits really that bad? Does Jumping Jesuits really go against Jesuit ideals in some manner? (For that manner is it against Jesuit ideals to use the name Jesuits?). This calls to mind George Carlin's 7 words you can't say on television routine. "There are rougly 322,000 words in the English language and only 7 of them can't be said on television. What a ratio that is! 321,993 to 7...That's incredible to be separated out from a group that big! They must really be bad...." Out of all the possible nickname write-in votes, only 2 are not excepted and will be tossed out immediately? That's incredible to be separated out from a group that big...they must really be bad. I ask you....what's wrong with Jumping Jesuits? |

The time has come...Episode 3 is upon us after much anticipation, jubilation, excitation, perturbation, and rumination. (C'mon...you had to know another Revenge of the Sith post was coming!). However, I am not without sympathy for the "rules" of this gaming board. May I suggest a hearty game of Episode 3 during the LAN party on the 28th? (Available unfortunately only on Xbox and PS2). hey! i figure i better post some gaming info on my little gaming site...what a concept! Things are getting a little scary around here anyways. As a rule, I despise console controllers built after 1995, since they have completely abandoned all notions of intuition, ergonomics, and aesthetics, becoming generally less wieldy than a mouse and keyboard. However, if this is truly the next-generation Sony controller, I must applaud them for an apparently streamlined design involving only 4 cardinal positions for mein thumbs, and not fucking with the dual-analog de-facto standard. www.filerushnews.com/images/album176/aai.jpg that, and it's dead sexy. Also, it's official... www.ut2007.com scroll down here for screenshots of the new engine... www.beyondunreal.com/main/ut2007/about.php Interviews suggest that the new "conquest" gametype is a coked-up joint of Assault and XMP concepts, with a possible persistent online world (see: Planetside). And rumor has it we only have to wait until 2006, strangely enough, to play it (much like UT2003 came out in the summer of 2002). Cheers! |

Bah! The only film that I will watch with "Royale" in the title is "Casino Royale"...the true James Bond. To tell you the truth, while I am familiar with the term Battle Royale, I was not aware that a film with the same name existed. Also...we need to discuss plans for next week. You and nearscape need to pick up your ticket from me. |

Peter, You and I need to watch the timeless classic 'Battle Royale'. As you well know, a 'Battle Royale' is a battle in which a group of people fight until only one person is not dead. That's the way I prefer to fight my battles. It works out good. The film is good too. Banned in Amerika though. I have 2 copies. More Marquette names? WE NEED MORE!!! B_W |

I prefer the Golden Threepios myself (thanks to CJOS for that one). |

Since MU is nameless right now, and they (the great and all knowing board of trustees) will be generating a list of new names to 'battle royale' against each other, we should help them out with our own names. (non-alumni especially welcome to contribute, as a fresh perspective would be great) I will get the ball rolling: "We are the Marquette - Old Gold Gold Crows Golden Beagles Gold Diggers Golden Avalanch (...of Piss) Gold Bricks Golden Jumping Jesuits Pillpoppers Golden Popes Wilde Men Golden Fighting Whiteies Golden Yes Men (represented by the board of trustees) Golden Dandies Golden Whisky Drunk Widows " I like um all. What do ya'll got? Laterz, B_W |

| You may want to get one of those shirts fast....Marquette just sent out an email telling everyone that they have repealed the name, "Gold" (although the email also said with 100% certainty that nickname "warriors" will NOT be reinstated). MU will hold on online vote (open only to MU faculty and students) to determine a new nickname. While write-ins will be accepted, all write-in votes for warriors will be eliminated. | |

| Shirts expressing one's disdain of the new MU nickname can be found at the Milwaukee Store kiosk in Southridge Mall. | |

I heard from a reliable source that there are 'No Gold' shirts available. I also heard from an equally reliable source that 'gin makes a man mean...booze up and riot'. However that's another story entirely. Laterz, B_W |

| Indeed, though I envision the mascot as a Jesuit donning some serious "bling" prancing around in a field of Benjamins.... | |

I think we all know that the new MU mascot will be none other than C-3PO. After Episode III is finished, C-3PO won't have a job. George Lucas has made it clear that the Star Wars TV spinoffs will not include major characters. So, there you go. C-3PO will not have to be the spokesman for RadioShack after all. I'm sure most of you have already heard about this by now....but it is official. Marquette has changed its nickname to.... The Marquette Gold! We've gone from MU to AU! (a little bit of Chemistry humor for those of you who are so inclined). Makes me wonder what the mascot will be... a little yellow turd, perhaps? Crow, Sorry, I will be drunk on my own power that weekend. Oh wait, that's every weekend. Nevermind! All, Timesplitters 3 is the sleeper hit of the year! OMG, it's got the sweetest 'off the chain' content yet, and one of the main female characters has the word 'SLUT' written across her chest! Not to be missed!!! P.S. it's out for all three systems, so if you've got one, check it out!!! B_W |
