Ah-ha! I knew the Machines were the right choice! They sent me on a mission to kill one of those damned bluepills that Zion had sent me on an escort mission to protect! Revenge is sweet! The Agent stated that he hoped I didn't find the mission too difficult emotionally. I wish I could have told him that this was the reason I signed up! Despite that, however, MxO has that all pervasive generic feel to it. |

| WTF, that totally bites about the Lithuanian government. I wonder what effect the EU will have on this (or this will have on the EU: it's the functional equivalent of the government of Oregon collapsing in the US). My grandma came off the boat from Lithuania, so I've got something of an interest in this, too. | |

I found this comment interesting from Steve Ballmer. Ballmer said the company also must enter new markets that "require big investments." He cited the Xbox game console as one, adding that even if Microsoft incurred $4 billion in losses before starting to see gains, that's still cheaper than buying an existing game company like Nintendo outright. |

| Friggin' Russian Mafia! They've screwed up just about every aspect of Lithuanian politics and no one but Valdas Adamkus has the cajones to take them on (figures, he's actually from Chicago where they know a few things about corruption in politics). This is actually a good thing, Valdas is cleaning house and Brazauskas should have resigned years ago. Maybe now Lithuania could rebuild itself without the mafiosos trying to weasel their way into power. | |

| I too once used LANtastic for my parents 10Mb cablebus home network. It took us two days to install and run the connection and although memories. I was able to share the modem from my dads computer up in my bedroom computer. I was the only kid that i knew that had internet in my room at the time. It was really hot. People started to think I had a mad scientist lab in my bedroom, even today, Peter might confir. But no matter how sweet the connection was, I found those LANtastic drivers were not very stable. | |

| Safely back in the Dark State. I really enjoyed the Lantastic gaming and all the hot dickings. Well, not the hot dickings from the film festival, as they tended to have too much emphasis on the "dicking" and less emphasis on the "hot," but besides that experience which has been mostly blocked out of my conscience, it was great. And Intrigue should know, because he's a real doctor. From America. | |

I WILL be attending this LAN. All I have to do is read a couple hundred pages over the weekend, which I'm sure I can accomplish whilst fraggin' yall in UT2K4. Of course, I won't actually be able to frag any of you, on account of there being a book located between my eyes and the monitor, but by random button mashing I may be able to get a couple lucky shots in and maybe wing someone who is not on my team. If Whiskey has any experience with Guild Wars, it would be nice to know what his impression of this relatively free MMORPG is and maybe, if the game is found worthy, we all go out and purchase us a copy. Then we can all form the n00b Guild and wage war on the un-l33t 5c27-k!dd!35. |

| What's the possibility that Battlefront II could be added to the playlist? Of course, that would mean that the gaming shifts to an Xbox.... Are console games allowed at LAN parties? Besides, it would give me a chance to give Intrigue his Xbox back. One problem though, I only have one copy of Battlefront II and everyone who would join in the fun would have to have a copy (hacked boxes anyone?). Just a thought... | |

Steam Games i would like to try include, Ragdoll Kungfu, it will be on the large screen and it will accept upto 4 usb mice for game play, i would like to give the 4 mice thing a shot, it is supposed to be great. JB are you bringing the Tank wars? If so i would like to set up the projector in the living room. It also seems like everyone is coming on friday rather than thursday, if that is the case then I should have the entire house to myself, so noise, parking, and hours of gaming should be no problem. |

Safe bets are probably UT2k4, Warcraft III, Starcraft, FEAR, Armagetron, Tribes Vengeance, and Civ 4. Also "out there" are the many Steam games, Moonbase Commander, and t3h WoWz. Anyone else please speak up with other stuff. I'm a bit out of the loop these days, as my PC is getting old and I haven't played anything other than WoW and Civ 4 since the last LAN. Kruger has Marble Blast now, so I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with that when the games get too beefy for Aphex. Also: http://www.3drealms.com/news/2006/05/june_22nd_is_prey_day.html No chance of Prey Demo for the LAN, but at least we have a date. |

well, that might leave a bit of a chance to try out MxO for a few hours at the lan party, they have a free thing going on tooo. on to important matters here is the frame work for next weeks lan event. Wed. I will be at a concert and will get back late so i plan to sleep in, say till like 8:30am(yes, that is sleeping in for me) So, any time after that you can start setting up the lan goodness at my place on thrusday. friday i suspect some of you will need to work, but i have no plans to. after about friday 5:30pmish my neighbors will be gone, and we can fill the driveway with cars for the weekend until 8pm on monday, so parking should not be a problem at all. On monday i might go racing with the SCCA at Miller park if the crowd is light on monday, and most are sleeping. thursday after 9am setup friday game till you drop (dawn till dusk till dawn) saturday game till you drop (dawn till dusk till dawn) sunday game till you drop (dawn till dusk till dawn) monday game tillyou go home or 6pm(dave has 24 night), which ever comes first. can you post the following name or nick: expected arival: expected departure: PC description:(laptop, desktop, cant bring one) installed games: games you would like to play: whats missing in your life?: |

The folks at CN are pissed at YouTube for posting their Robot Chicken segments, such as that SW one. Depending on what assignments I get from my class, I am intending to attend the LAN. I'm done with EVE. I've concluded that there is no point to it. As every reward I've run into can also be obtained through the markets, there is no point in going on missions. Equipment selection is rather light, with the uber-expensive weapons being not that much better than the moderately priced ones. I've been in systems that are supposed to be etremely dangerous, but any computer-controled ship seems to be rediculously weak, meaning that the real threats are other players. So there is no rare stuff to be gained by killing bots. Instead, you kill other players and risk the millions of ISK you have wrapped up in your ship to get stuff that you could have bought from the safety of a station. And chances are that if a player is carrying equipment you can use on your ship, that player is also likely to kill you in a fight. In all my time playing, I did not see a single player attack another, and trust me, you can see fights from ungodly distances away. So, instead of fighting, you mine and you trade. This means that EVE has less similarity to WoW, and more resemblance to eTrade, as you spend a lot of time looking at the markets. So, I'm done. I'm uninstalling EVE as I type. |

nearscape: I don't see you having to fly around for hours looking for a certain guy. EVE gives you waypoints for everything, so you don't waste time chasing down dead ends. As for trying to find someone selling a rare piece of equipment, that is no problem as well. When you go to a station, you can either view what items are available at the station, system, or region you are in. You can also buy equipment found eight jumps away in this manner. The frustration level in this respect is very low. The worst part is trying to understand the categories. It took me an entire day before I realized that shield skills were located under the "Engineering" category. Also, if you want to move quicker, there is always the "Navigation" skill set that makes your ship fly faster. Well, it seems I was overly paranoid in regards to my pirate mission. When I finally got up the gumption to try again, I completely masacred them. So, I'm saying you have about 5-6 hours of skill training before you can complete combat missions, provided you choose the correct skills (which I didn't). So your first hours of EVE will be devoted to either mining or running courier missions. I have found a couple of unfortunate quirks in the game. 1) There is no ability to set up a que for your skills. So if you are away from your character and he gains a skill, precious time is wasted until you return. Thus, it is recomended that you get a few skills up to where they require over eight-hours to complete before you log off for the night. 2) Agents are rather stupid. I was asked to recover some cargo for one agent, but the ship I was in could not hold it all. No problem, I'll just make two trips, and store the remainder at the station. The Agent would not recognize the amount in my hanger, and it also would not take the cargo I was carrying off my hands. This meant a 20-minute round-trip to switch to the closest ship I have to a freighter just to get the agent to recognize that I had completed the mission. This might not have been too bad, except that missions are timed. You generally have a few days to complete them (as well as only a few days to accept them), but large bonuses are rewarded for completing missions within an hour or so. So far, I have not come across any mission that rewards you with a unique item or skill. I would be absolutely surprised if they did not exist, but apparently rewards for early missions will be of a more mundane variety. |

Since the Zombie pub crawl was so awesome, maybe we can do some co-op zombie stomping at the LAN. http://www.beyondunreal.com/daedalus/singlepost.php?id=9417 Also, I was a little surprised to see Gabe and Tycho giving such glowing reviews of Gears of War from E3. I had pretty much written it off as an over-hyped engine demo used to sell Xboxes, but apparently there's actual gameplay there. G and T are usually very good at cutting through such bullshit. |

| I'd love to see a massively online Homeworld 3. No persistent universe, just instanced battlegrounds (procedurally-generated different each time, though they should probably be symmetrical like Tribes Balanced was) where you work your way up the ranks to control bigger and better ships. None of this way-point and auto-combat nonsense. Maybe a marketplace where you could mark up your ships to build recognition like in Gunbound. | |

Oh yes...Earth and Beyond...traveling for hours from warp-point to warp-point trying to find that one guy who sells that one thing you need to make money...if that is the case, then I won't have to worry about an Eve fee because it won't hold my interest past the trial period. ;) TradeWars 2002 for teh win! |

this sounds like E&B on crack, maybe i should give it a try, i loved E&B, especially the taxi services that people were offering you because it was so easy to get lost, unlike in WoW. E&B became a game where personal know how could earn you reall money and cred. It was a ton of fun, in E&B as you leveled it became easier and easier to wander off into no mans land and wind up in random space wars with reaver like craft. The party system in E&B was also cool as solo missions earned you less points so people always grouped so that they could get more points. |

I have come up for air! However, I am not falling behind, as at this very moment my character is learning how to pilot better frigates! ONLY TEN MORE HOURS TO GO! But not is all good. This level system does make actually getting into the game slow. For instance, since I posted last night, I have yet to graduate beyond blowing up training drones. I tried taking a mission to go kill a handful of pirates, a mission available right after you finish the tutorial, but after the first five seconds of combat I was looking for a random destination to warp to just to save my POS starting ship. So, I went looking for some better weapons, armor, shields, repair units, etc for my ship so that I could take on more than just navigational markers. To my surprise, my ship cannot even BEGIN to handle any equipment beyond what it starts out with, so I must buy another ship. Here is where the level system bites me in the ass: I cannot pilot a better ship. My character simply does not know how. So, I have to train that skill. Four and a half hours latter, I can finally pilot a basic frigate. Now, to put on all those wonderful weapons and armor and shields and such, but again I run into a brick wall as my character does not know how to use any of that stuff either. Of course, though, to actually be able to learn these skills I must actually purchase them first, which means I need money, which means I spend lots and lots of time around asteroid belts, shooting rocks with lasers. Very time consuming, and I'm very ineffecient at it, which means that instead of focusing on my combat skills, I start training my industrial skills, just so I can get more cash so I can eventually get those combat skills. But, instead of buying those combat skills, I buy things like cargo holds and mining lasers! Oh how easily distracted I become! Eventually, I do get around to buying destruction-oriented abilities. Unfortunately, I have to buy them from stations that are ten jump points away, which means I can leave the computer and fix dinner, watch TV, or read a book. In fact, you can do that with just about anything you do in. Mining an asteroid field? Go take a nap! Running a courier mission? You can probably run to the store and be back in time. EVE definately seems to be a game that you can just run in the background as you go about your daily life. It's not a good thing, but it's not a bad thing, either. But this is why I want to get to the combat part, because I want to actualy play the game, not watch my ship travel through hyperspace for fifteen minutes. Gameplay is all right. Unfortuantely, there is no first-person view and you cannot directly control the path of your ship. Movement is almost entirely based on waypoints, so you don't pilot your ship to an asteroid, you first select the asteroid and then tell your ship fly to it. Combat works the same way. You target the enemy ship, and then you tell your ship to go into orbit around it while your cannons fire at the ship wihout any input from you beyond authorization. When the target ship blows up, you then click on the next ship and you again let the computer do all the work. There is not all that much room for individual skill in this system, so it seems as though battles will be won or lost before you even enter into one. Sun Tsu would be proud. It seems that the real meat is in the corporations. Just as WoW has guilds, EVE works in the corporate world. I don't know if it is possible to actually have a ship that is not in danger of being p0wn3d by at least 1/3 of all the other ships of the same level out there. Therefore, you need to be in a group to get much accomplished. As you have a limited amount of slots, and some add-ons that make your ship good at one thing penalize it from doing anything else (e.g. Cargo holds negatively impact your ship's speed and health), specialization will leave you vulnerable. But then again, if you want to be good at anything, you need to specialize. So When you go to mine in those dangerous areas, to do it effectively you'll have to split the workload up so that one group mines while another stands guard. Death seems to be pretty severe, which I like. From what I understand, when your ship blows up, it's gone, as is everything that is equiped to it and everything in the cargo hold. In order for death to not be catastrophic, you actually take out an insurance policy on your ship. I see many opportunities for insurace fraud in EVE, as you can probably make more money off of collecting on a policy than you could if you tried to sell it. There is something about escape pods being blown up, but I have no idea what impact that would have. |

from bungie "We were hiding in the back out of sight - primarily to see what the crowd reaction would be like. We started sweating when Gears of War got immediate rapturous applause, and the crowd went positively nuts when Peter Moore revealed that Grand theft Auto 4 would be released for 360 (my bet - set in Tokyo and starring Beat Takeshi as a Yakuza boss)." | I was just doing some thinking (scary!) and it occurs to me that WoW may gross more than Titanic very soon now. Mojo puts Titanic at around $1.8 billion globally. Assuming 7+ million boxes sold at around $40, that's $280 million. At around 5+ million subscribers over 18 months of operation, $14/mo, that's $1.26 billion, for a total of around $1.6 billion, with and expansion right around the corner that is expected to cause the revival of millions of cancelled accounts. Interesting. Of course, I don't know the home video figures for Titanic, or how much the WoW China subscription fees are. But it still seems inevitable. | |

| The curse of Farscape continues!!! These are just some of the same concerns that forced Farscape out by Sci-Fi Channel. Now that SG-1's got Ben Browder (Crichton --> Mitchell), Claudia Black (Aeryn ---> Vala), and a guest starring role for Anthony Simcoe (D'Argo --->Collins), it's Farscape all over again!!! At least SG-1 saved themselves by dropping Richard Dean Anderson (still, I wish I would have seen him fix the Stargate with a Q-tip, a rubberband, and some chewing gum....). | |

Stargate SG-1 is a mature series and production costs continue to mount: it's budgeted for at least $2 million U.S. per episode. Tax breaks remain in place, but the costs advantages of filming in Vancouver have evaporated due to unfavorable exchange rates. http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6332083.html thought nearscape might find it interesting |

| this morning, in the wake of E3 and my morning exercise, i was thinking, what if WoW(world of warcraft) stole hollywoods thunder. What if games like or more specifically WoW itself is to blame for the loss in sales at the box office. I know for myself, I used to watch alot of second week movies that I might have missed opening night for some reason. | |

ok, so i have set up my new TV, its a westinghouse 42" 1080p display, and it is amazing. Images are sharp and clear at any resolution. Refresh rates are as good if not better than my samsungs, and did i mention that it was 1080p. I get full 1920x1080 60hz resolution on a pc. If you might be worried about scaling, don't, the electronics on this display work perfectly, 1024x768 images look just as good as 1080p. The downsides to the display inlude the ability to nearly blind you with high white levels in order to create the 1000:1 contrast ratio. When white color areas are scarse, the blacks can look more like a really dark navy blue, my samsungs are better in this department. Overall I will not want to look at my sony HDTV anymore, the scaling electronics alone make this TV 10x less of a hasle. second, have you guys heard about STO (Star Trek Online) visualy this looks greate, i wonder if it will play as well as wow, or if it might be a little akward like MxO. In any case, check it out. http://www.startrek.perpetual.com/news.html |

re: Huxley Yeah, I've been following that one for a while. Another UE3 title that looks promising on the Action/SciFi/RPG front is Too Human. http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/704/704053p1.html Screen shots look hot. But so far, all these "next gen" titles have looked hot, but none have actually delivered the goods gameplay-wise. Except for Oblivion I guess, though the world leveling issue does sound like an exercise in futility to me, but I can see some people liking it. Me, I actually like being able to return to a noob area and WTFPWN WoW-style. |

Well, I figured I would break down and finally go legit. I've got the Adobe Video Bundle ordered. Worth the 650 for Photoshop CS2 and After Effects Pro alone. And I was just concerned that the academic version of 3DS might have similar issues as Gmax. At one seventh the price of the commercial version, it just seems too good to be true. |

NS, I believe I am in possession of every U.S. release of the trilogy (or individual releases - see Super 8 release of ANH) in any format at 16 (not including the DVD's coming out this September) The average fanboy probably has 4 - 1987 VHS release, 1995 Re-masters, 1997 Special Editions, 2004 DVD editions. Here's my list: Super 8 - ANH 5 minute version Super 8 - ANH 16 minute version Super 8 - ANH 30 minute version 1985 VHS rental store release 1986 VHS redub trilogy rental store release (1st release of the movies in widescreen) 1987 VHS Classic release (this is the release that most of you are familiar with) 1989 VHS box set (comes From Star Wars to Jedi and Lucasfilm book excerpt) 1990 Laserdisc original trilogy (1st release, time compressed-sped up 3%) 1993 Laserdisc original trilogy (2nd release, non time-compressed) 1994 VHS Pre-remaster release (Looks like the 1987 releases, but some initial colortiming problems and composite issues were fixed). 1995 VHS Remasters (this was by the commercial's admonition, the last time the original movies would be available (non special edition). 1997 VHS Special editions (release 1) 1999 VHS Special editions (re-release2) 2002 VHS Special editions (re-release 3 - Spanish track) 2004 DVD Special edition (with bonus disc) 2005 DVD Special edition (non-bonus disc) |

I wonder how many different copies of that trilogy the average fanboy has...aren't they in double-digits now? The machine in question is the first Backlot PC, I believe it is a 2ghz Opteron. We think part of the problem is that it's a dual-CPU MB with only one processor actually in it. It never seems to use all available memory (2GB) or bandwidth. We're going to look into it after this project is done. I never had any Edu-to-Commercial issues, although my experience is a little out of date (R4 edu to R6). Back then, the only difference I could detect between the two versions was the EULA. The educational version was the whole program, quite intact, no watermarks or anything. I don't know if it still works like that; I haven't used an educational version since. I can't directly move projects from Commercial back to Educational, however, but I'm pretty sure that's just because the scene files are not backwards compatible R6 to R4. But there are ways around that though, as you can export most of the data in components (IGES geometry, the Material Editor Library, and .ANM animation dope sheet), it just takes some busywork to put things back together. |

Since this does concern video games (in passing reference) I figured it would be okay to post it here for NS. NS, I found a good source for X-Wing sound effects (complete with dopplerizations). If I can only convert the .xtr files to .wav we should be in good shape (.xtr is Lucasart's proprietary extension for sound files in X-Wing versus TIE...they come up with different extensions for every game they release). Cool Edit Pro doesn't seem to like the .xtr's but maybe SCUMM could handle it. With the doppler effects already built into the sound bed, you could easily use just the Avid audio tools for the sync to screen. If you or anyone else has other suggestions let me know. |

We will see what E3 brings...but it looks like chances of a UT2007 demo for the Memorial day LAN are slim; Midway has hinted at a winter release. However, if you follow the news at http://www.3drealms.com, it looks like Prey is getting very close. They've started releasing "countdown" videos. In addition to fucking with the gravity/physics, apparently their portal tech also allows them to fuck with scaling as well. Looks severely sweet. I think I'm more excited about this than about the new UT. If all else fails, I'd like to try Defense Alliance. http://www.planetunreal.com/da/2/ Think Assault with Team Fortress-style classes and deployable turrets. And remember to look for sweet deals on Civ IV and Tribes: Vengeance. |

| My film-out rendering for Alejandro Alcondez, which has been going on for 5 days solid, is currently using 600mb physical and 600mb VM, and will be breaking 100 million page faults soon. I haven't thought about memory managers since an operating systems CS class I took in 2000, but there's definitely something wrong on that machine... | |

The Firefox "memory leak" is a 1337 method of caching pages, and it gets around the problems with the windows memory manager. There is a way to disable it if thats a problem. I would start by looking to disable page caching or something like that. The current windows memory manager was deployed on the orginal NT 3.51 or earlier, and is over 10 years old, maybe 12, and has no idea how to work above 2gb of ram, let alone being efficient above 512mb. JB can make some claims about this, with 3ds in windows. |

It's just fun to get exuberant about May! Memorial day though and I'm looking forward to ze LAN. Biggest problem I've had with IE 7 is the way to use the so-called "AJAX" techology doesn't work the same in 7 as it did 6. So I have yet ANOTHER browser check to make sure when 6 or 7 hit this applicaiton I wrote for work AJAX will still work. On the bright side 7 now works with the standard HTTPRequest object so that's a plus. I do like that installing it gave me anti-alias goodness in Outlook though. Now that it's free I've actually been using Opera because it doesn't hog as much memory as Firefox does (Espically when you have a good number of tabs open and a history). With all the programs I have running at work in a day I have enough problems hitting my page file too much. |

No, it does not sound familiar. You can send me the source code and I'll take a look. I just put together a quick page that only has a unordered list with five list elements. The CSS floats the LIs to the left and puts a 1px, solid black border around them. Works fine except that the last list element for whatever reason has an extra line, but that can be fixed by setting the height to 1em and overflow to hidden. Even removing margins and padding from the body, ul, and li elements do not result in the top border disapearing. Although, copying the CSS code from the site you provided may have illuminated the problem. If you are using relative positioning, make sure that the coordinates that you are using (e.g. "top: -1.32em;") are not pushing the border off the top edge of the screen. In related news, I may have just gotten a little job redesigning a webpage for an organization that does some pretty heavy scholarly publishing in the area of civil-military relations. |

I don't even know if it is a chain or not, but if you ever see an Omega Burger, stop and get the Omega Caliente Burger. It will r0xx0r j00r b0xx0rs. In more ways than one. Also, it reminds me of that fictional burger chain in Jay and Silent Bob movies. MySpace could be the ultimate example of how not to implement xhtml/css. On that note, I've got some crappy crap of my own in the works that will hopefully be showable at the Memorial LAN. What do you think is the best way to trick IE6 into rendering borders properly at the very top of a page? I'm trying to make something with an inline list, but the styles for the top border don't work unless I put something else above it, like a HR or BR, which is lame. Sound familiar to anyone? Here's kinda where I'm headed: http://diveintomark.org/public/tabs-example.html Except this doesn't work right in IE if there's nothing physically above it on the page. |

IE7 looks like a decent browser. I have restored IE's icon to my desktop... although below Firefox's. Wait a sec... the "I" in Internet Explorer comes before the "M" in Mozilla Firefox... Oh the tyranny of the alphabet! The organizational gods demand obedience! So IE must be above Firefox afterall... IE7 is yet another browser that needs to be coded for, as it still has its own little quirks, but I think Microsoft has solved any hair-pulling issues for coders with their "![if IE]--" html code that manages to clear validation. The IE7 Blog is a good sign that Microsoft is "getting it" and seems to be learning from the Open Source community. I mean, they're even looking at pages like Slashdot to evaluate IE7. Hopefully they will extend this approach to other products. Competition = Good. |
