Since Adam kind of started the "visual effects" thread back up, here's a recent article from Variety on the current state of the VFX bussiness. According to the article, Spielberg, not Lucas, is responsible for destroying VFX houses! Darn you War of the Worlds!

Similar to Intrigue's post about "The Clone Wars" trailer, this trailer was posted the same day. Only it's a fan made production and is about the stories after ROTJ in books, comics, etc.

NS, this one's for you. Based off of Adam's link, what's the difference between "First 3D computer animation in film" and "First animation in film using 3D CGI"? While I am not complaining that they give Star Wars credit for some of it's early use of computer generated animation (they cite the Death Star trench but I would also like to point out that some of the original shots of the actual Death Star in A New Hope were CGI as well) it seems like Futureworld (1976) has it beat. It's almost like they want to give Star Wars credit even though it wasn't the first completed film to show off these technologies. Also, since I'm going to be petty about wording, Pixar wasn't singularly Pixar until after Lucas spun the company off of ILM in 1985 (after Young Sherlock Holmes) and sold it. Prior to that point it was just part of ILM.

Many of us think of the movie “Tron” as the the first film to use computer animation or effects in any form. But the technology goes back a lot further than 1982, when Tron was released. Here are some notable milestones in computer animation and effects in film

Interesting read.

That's fucking awesome. I'm so glad it's not World of StarCraft. I like WoW a lot, but I don't need to do it all over again with different textures.

So we gorged on Supreme Commander this weekend and it's great. It's still very demanding on your system when you've got a large map full of players. Also, the bots, even the "hard" ones, don't really prepare you for the learning curve online. Fortunately, the replay system is robust and when you really get WTFPWNED you can study up.

B_W,

This "news" has been making the rounds but it actually stems from a misconception. Lucas was referring to his live action series. As Lucas has announced earlier he is working on 2 current Star Wars projects. One is his CG animated series continuing the "Clone Wars" saga. The second is a live action series that takes place between the events of episode 3 (Revenge of the Sith) and episode 4 (A New Hope). This live action serial is said to begin with a miniseries-like event (For those of you familiar with Farscape, this would be like the Peacekeeper Wars or for "24" fans, the way they show the first 2 episodes of the season together to kick off the show for a new season). A miniseries consisting of 2 nights (basically like 2 movies) that leads directly into the new series. The original reporter of this story misunderstood this concept as "2 new movies". These aren't going to be movies shown in theaters, they will be basically a 2-night miniseries that launches his live action series at the beginning of its first season.

This might be old news to some, but I really enjoy this quotation from Don Imus's CBS Radio contract:

"Company [CBS Radio] acknowledges its familiarity with the program Conducted by Artist [Imus] on the station [WFAN] prior to company’s ownership thereof and it, and its familiarity with the reviews and comments, both favorable and unfavorable concerning Artist and his material by critics, reviewers and writers of the various media both in New York and nationally. CBS Radio acknowledges that Artist’s services to be rendered hereunder are of a unique, extraordinary, irreverent, intellectual, topical, controversial and personal character and that programs of the same general type and nature containing these components are desired by CBS Radio and are consistent with Company rules and policies."

I'm gonna throw that sweet action into just about everything I do now. Yeah!

We're ramping up our book of business with Pixel Magic and this is what they use. Plus, since it's Xeons, I'm planning to reboot them into windows for 3D rendering when PMFX is on hiatus. Also getting into HD restoration of 10-20 year old films for BluRay/HD-DVD for Fotokem, which is very high volume so the 10TB RAID comes in handy.

Intrigue, you just got answers up the ying-yang in LOST for the past 2 weeks and you're confused? You mean you were less confused when they were making 6 new questions per episode?

I'm sure one of the things that you are confused about is the fact that while most answers on the show are scientific/logical, some mysteries on the island are supernatural and could never be explained with science or logic (we got introduced to one HUGE supernatural element in this week's episode).

crow, the reason that the constitution does not have in it that the president will do what ever he or she gets the most emails on is because they did not have email back then. the printing press was a luxury. today we live in a world where everyone pretty much has their own printing press.

Or, instead of that explanation, you could try reading the Federalist Papers and find out what they were actually thinking. If the founders wanted rapid response to public opinion, they would have stopped at the House of Representatives. Instead, they included a four-year presidency. And they certainly would not have left the election of Senators up to state legislators.

i would rather have a flip floppy disk of a president that knows how to get peoples online opinion, than to have a king in offices that feels he can throw you in the clink with out a trial after tapping your phone calls illegally without your knowledge, that is just plain unacceptable and if politicizations think that i will ever willingly vote for some patriot act supporter, i would rather die. that bullshit is so not American. and dont try to tell me how the president has such interperative powers.

Fortunately, we do not have a president in office now that believes he has such a power, or has even tried to exercise such a power. If you happen to believe that we currently do, I invite you to visit this link: http://eclectech.co.uk/mindcontrol.php

it seems like vista is using some of the pixel shader 3 runtimes for the os, wow does not seem effected because its the simplest of the games on the list to render. from what i remember, wow did not use any light distortion effects, or complex bump mapping, just really pretty colored single layer textures on simple polygons. i am starting to think that the wow guys just have amazing texture artists, because that game with standard textures would look like assss.

this brings me to a movie line quote from the 13th floor, .... " don't things look just a little desaturated?, ... i will definitely have to fix that." the 13th floor is a story about a human getting trapped in a virtual reality world, kinda like a modern day low budget indy tron with a twist, with out all of the really cool line art.

BW would hate it, cause its real scifi, on the other hand i gather that DarkNES, Irenicus would totally geek out on it.

do i seem autistic?

i would agree with a number of things but autistic, OCD?

i may be paranoid, ADD, asymmetrically intelligent, mildly dyslexic, but i do not think that i have OCD or autism. as far as math goes i can do it as long as i do not have to write it down. once i have to write down the math to do it. it becomes as challenging for me to perform as proper grammer and spelling. i was able to get through most of college level engineering mathematics by just knowing the answer, when this no longer worked, i was in some serious trouble, i had to learn how i learn, in this sense, i have learned that i need to schedule productive time way in advance so that i can get excited about being productive, else i feel really reluctant to focus.

now as far as the iron problem, this is a possibility. it would explain two things about me.
1. i really enjoy eating ice.
2. i really enjoy being a HUGE carnivore.

both of which are related to the body needing more iron. when i go to donate blood, i will score 37-39 depending on what i eat about 1 hour before giving blood. if i eat a lot of red meat i will score closer to 39/40(raw red meet seems to have a stronger effect). if i eat fish or something else, i have scored 37 or lower and have been almost turned away from giving blood if it was not for me having a blood type that is in high demand.

i am curious what foods might increase my iron count, i am wondering if this might decrease my craving for food, and high calorie fatty proteins.

(a third explanation that seems to be given to all habit of this order, like pealing beer bottle labels, is that i am sexually frustrated; to this i say that, i am most definitely frustrated by women. they do not seem compatible with my current lifestyle, they all want me to be normal, have a normal job and we all know that i am not normal.)

Intrigue,you pagophage!
I found this on MSNBC.com just for you. Very interesting.

Is chewing ice bad for your teeth?

Some people routinely chew ice, and this can be especially harmful, according to Dr. Tar-Chee Aw, associate professor at the University of Washington Department of Restorative Dentistry. “The habit can lead to gum injuries and fractured teeth,” he says. “Normal wear and tear is sped up, and failure of restorations is accelerated due to the continuous stress, strain and repeated impact on teeth.”

Aw says compulsive and repeated chewing of ice, known as pagophagia, “is most commonly linked to iron-deficiency anemia, more common in women. Among the symptoms of iron deficiency is an inflammation or soreness of the tongue, which may intuitively lead to ingestion of ice for relief. It can also be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as a developmental disorder like autism, or a psychological disorder like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or psychiatric illness like schizophrenia, or even simply emotional stress. In this case, pharmacologic and/or cognitive behavior therapy may be recommended.”

Of course, we all know that the definition of a leader is someone who follows poll numbers.

If someone is running for president and they run on a platform of "I'll do whatever the group that sends me the most emails tells me to do," then fine. It's a horrible way to run a country, which is why the founding fathers did not put all the power in the hands of the House of Representatives, but at least you know what you're getting and the people can fairly take the blame for the train wreck they're about to unleash. Of course, if you're looking for something like this, you don't want elected officials. Instead, you want the legislative process to look like American Idol, and a machine to carry out executive functions.

If someone is running for president on a clearly defined platform, but then changes to a policy that aims to seek whichever angry mob yells the loudest, then he's betrayed everyone who voted for him.

Now, the latter happens to a greater or lesser extent in every presidency. It's the nature of politics that our elected officials do not exist in a closed system, oblivious and unaffected by the overall political climate. But if Rose's rapid shifting on this issue is any indication, the US would wind up resembling Venezuela under his leadership. Which means, of course, that it will be great if you're part of the mob, and suck if you're anyone else.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday May 4 2007 2:37pm
Hmm...there's something intriguing about an elected representative who would actually do what the population wants above their own ego. It's not very American, I know, but it would be a curious experiment.

It looks like Sony is finally bringing those wacky "Card Arcade" games we saw in Japan to the home console! I can't imagine this making money outside of Japan and maybe GenCon, but it is neat to see them try.
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/theeyeofjudgment/news.html?sid=6169918&tag=topslot;title;1&om_act=convert&om_clk=topslot

And I'm thinking May 19th I'll try and bunker down at the Intrigue estates for some Supreme Commander, Wii, Civ4, and uh, other stuffs.
